Nneka loved school more than anything. Every morning, she woke before the sun to walk the long road to her classroom.

But between her home and her school ran a wide, angry river. When the rains came, the water rose and roared.

One morning, the old wooden bridge was gone. Washed away in the night. Nneka stood at the water's edge, her books held close to her chest.

She sat under a mango tree and thought and thought. Then she picked up a stick and began to draw a plan in the dirt.

She showed her plan to her neighbours. One brought rope. One brought planks. One brought strong hands. Together, they began to build.

When the bridge was finished, it did not belong to Nneka alone. It belonged to every child who would ever cross it on the way to school.
